NARM®

“HEALING DEVELOPMENTAL TRAUMA”

The NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM®) was developed by Dr. Laurence Heller, a longtime teacher of Somatic Experiencing®. In contrast to Somatic Experiencing®, which focuses primarily on shock trauma, NARM® is particularly concerned with developmental, relational, and attachment trauma.

Shock trauma generally refers to one-time events that overwhelm the nervous system and could not be processed afterward. Developmental trauma, on the other hand, arises during stages of life, often in childhood, in which a person had to adapt to an environment that did not allow the expression and development of their individuality and “truth.”

A child’s existential need for stable connection with caregivers often makes it necessary to put their own needs aside. NARM® is a non-regressive, resource-oriented approach that focuses on relationships in the here and now. It complements the body-oriented approach of Somatic Experiencing® with psychodynamic models such as attachment theory and object relations theory.

The work takes place simultaneously on both the physical and psychological levels of human experience. The aim of NARM® is to improve or restore the connection with oneself, one’s emotions, the body, and one’s own sense of vitality.
