Practice for Trauma Therapy & Crisis Support
What Is Trauma?
ORIGIN
Trauma can result from an overwhelming event that happens too fast, too intensely, too early, and/or unexpectedly, causing the organism to experience an overpowering threat to its existence and overwhelming its normal coping mechanisms.
REACTION
The body’s natural response to such an event is an immense mobilization of survival energy, preparing it to fight or flee.
If neither fight nor flight is possible at that moment because the aggressor is too powerful or the situation does not allow it (for example, in a car accident), the person freezes.
The entire event is then “frozen” with the help of this intense energy as a means of protection. The person can remain trapped in this internal state of freeze: the natural flow of life energy is suppressed, and the connection to oneself, to other people, to nature, and to one’s own spiritual source is disrupted.
TYPICAL SYMPTOMS OF TRAUMA
This can lead to a wide range of trauma-related symptoms:Physical symptoms may include insomnia or difficulty relaxing, migraines, chronic pain, muscle tension, exaggerated startle responses, cold sweats, various types of pain, exhaustion, numbness, low heart rate or blood pressure, digestive problems, and impaired immune system function.
Mental and emotional symptoms may include anxiety and a tendency toward anxiety or panic attacks, depression, persistent worry, racing thoughts, hypervigilance, outbursts of anger, mania, and excessive relationship conflict.
